Choosing the right mosquito repellent for you and your family is the best way to make sure you are prepared to face the great outdoors. But with so many options, how do you choose? Here are some things to note when shopping for your next solutions:
DEET
Insect repellants that contain DEET are usually used when going into the deep woods to make sure that both mosquitos and ticks stay clear of your skin. DEET works very effectively and helps reduce the risk of diseases carried by these unwanted woodland creatures. Though it has been considered safe by groups like the American Society of Pediatrics, some studies do show that long term use may have toxic effects on the nervous system, and it should be rinsed off of skin before returning indoors.
Picaridin
Similar to DEET, Picaridin works great against both mosquitos and ticks, however has been proven to be harmful to the environment. It doesn’t, however, have the same worrisome health effects on humans as DEET, so may be a better option when going on an adventure in the deep woods.
Natural Remedies
Many natural oils are great at keeping mosquitos away! Eucalyptus oil is a known mosquito repellent and has a great smell unlike a lot of stronger options that contain DEET and Picaridin. Make sure to take note that this natural remedy is NOT to be used in children under 3 years of age. Other great oils include cedarwood, tea tree, rosemary, and lemongrass!
