Why Mosquito Bites Itch
Mosquitos are arguably the most annoying pest around. From their bothersome buzzing sounds to their itchy red bites they leave, they are a constant nuisance for us. By far the most annoying thing is when a mosquito bites. Now you got the itch!
You might be wondering exactly why a mosquito bite itches so much. First of all mosquito bites affect people differently. An individuals reaction to a mosquito bite can vary due to genetics and the chemical makeup of their body. If you’re lucky, you may not have reactions at all! This is obviously not the case for everyone.
When a mosquito bites, it is not only sucking your blood but it is also introducing saliva into the bloodstream. A mosquitos saliva contains over 100 complex proteins and some chemicals that serve as anticoagulants for blood. These proteins set off the body’s immune system to react to the affected area. The body releases a compound called histamine which causes inflammation and that terrible itchy feeling.
Post Bite
Once bitten, you may not experience an initial reaction, for your body has not prepared itself to respond to these foreign proteins. In most cases, your body will eventually begin to react to the proteins entering your body. Some people can build a tolerance to mosquito bites having very mild reactions, others may not notice they have been bitten at all!
When having a reaction to a mosquito bite the first thing everyone wants to do is scratch it. Stop! Try your best not to scratch your bites, it will only make matters worse. Scratching the affected area will lead to further inflammation and pain. Scratching too often can lead to breaking skin causing bleeding and possible scarring.
